The Best Free Icon Sets and Icon Sites in 2026

Curated by Musharof Chowdhury · Last reviewed October 16, 2026 · How we pick

For product UI, pick one consistent open-source set and stick to it: mixing sets is the fastest way to make an interface look unfinished. For marketing pages and slides, a large search engine with many styles is more useful.

Every set below is free to use. The open-source UI sets need no attribution; the large marketplaces (Flaticon, Icons8) usually ask for a credit link on their free plans.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free icon library for web apps?

Lucide is the best default: it is open source, consistent and has official packages for the main JavaScript frameworks. Choose Heroicons for Tailwind CSS projects and Phosphor if you need several weights of the same icon.

Can I use free icons in commercial projects?

Open-source sets such as Lucide, Heroicons, Phosphor, Tabler and Remix Icon can be used commercially without attribution. Marketplaces such as Flaticon and Icons8 allow commercial use on their free plans only if you credit them with a link.

Should I use SVG icons or an icon font?

Use SVG icons for new projects. They render more sharply, are easier to make accessible and let you ship only the icons you use. Icon fonts still work but load the whole set and can fail silently if the font does not load.

Can I mix icons from different sets?

Avoid it in product UI. Sets differ in stroke width, corner radius and grid size, so mixed icons look inconsistent. If one set is missing an icon, Iconify can help you find the closest match in a similar style.
